The takeaway
Tirzepatide produced greater average weight loss than placebo in this Japanese trial.
Who took part?
Researchers randomized 267 adults without diabetes. After excluding one site, 225 remained in the analysis. Participants had obesity with related health conditions; all groups received lifestyle support.
Percentage points more weight loss; efficacy estimand, not total loss
Original visual based on the study.
| Group or measure | Result |
|---|---|
| Tirzepatide 10 mg | 16.1 points |
| Tirzepatide 15 mg | 21.1 points |
What changed?
At 72 weeks, the estimated advantage over placebo was 16.1 percentage points with 10 mg and 21.1 points with 15 mg. These are between-group differences, not total weight loss. The analysis estimated effects during treatment.
The trade-offs
Adverse events affected 84%, 86% and 69% of the respective groups, commonly digestive symptoms. Few stopped the study because of adverse events. The excluded site and selected population limit generalizability.
Eli Lilly funded the study.
