Switching from daily to weekly GLP treatment

A small trial compared two weekly medicines after liraglutide.

The takeaway

A small Japanese trial compared switching from liraglutide to semaglutide or dulaglutide in people with type 2 diabetes. Weight loss favored semaglutide, but reported adverse events were more common.

What researchers tested

Thirty-two adults were randomized; 30 completed 26 weeks. The weekly doses studied were semaglutide 0.5 mg and dulaglutide 0.75 mg. Average weight changes were −2.6 kg versus −0.1 kg among completers.

The trade-offs

Adverse events were reported by 12 of 16 semaglutide participants and three of 16 dulaglutide participants. One semaglutide participant could not continue because of severe vomiting and weight loss.

What it means

This was an open-label, single-hospital study stopped below its recruitment target because of supply problems. Results may differ with other doses or populations.
